Welcome to the BWCC.
Overview
Burg Wheelers Cycling Club (BWCC) was founded in 1983 from the merging of two prominent cycling clubs in Pietermaritzburg: Maritzburg United Cycling Club (MUCC) and Wanderers Cycling Club (WCC). MUCC boasts several Springbok Cyclists from the 1970’s: Robbie McIntosh (5 times winner of the Rapport Tour) and Ralph Smout (multiple SA Sprint and SA 1000m Time-trial champion) whilst WCC boasts Bobby Nefdt (SA Junior Road Champion and SA Elite Road Champion).
Community, it’s what we are all about.
Burg Wheelers Cycling Club funds a Cycling Development Programme designed specifically for uplifting previously disadvantaged riders. This programme currently has in the region of 15 young riders.
BWCC is currently in negotiations with the Msunduzi Municipality to partnership with them in maintaining and upgrading the Sax Young Velodrome in Alexandra Park, Pietermaritzburg, where we hosted our inaugural 24hr Team Cycle Relay Challenge with several riders clocking over 500km in the specified 24h period. BWCC is a progressive cycling club that has over the years been sponsored by Time Freight and is currently sponsored by Compendium Insurance Brokers, powered by Bidvest. The cycling club constantly challenges its riders to involve themselves in the many activities arranged for our members throughout the year, as well an annual charity ride where funds are raised for deserving charities. The club aims to meet to changing needs of its members, creating a fun social environment, enabling our members to embrace a healthy lifestyle that cycling offers.

One of KZN’s largest & oldest cycling clubs.
BWCC has grown a pre-covid membership of just on 250 cyclists of all age groups and genders. The club has hosted very popular Road, Track and MTB races over the years catering for cyclists from elites to fun riders. We currently cater for MTB cyclists in 5 different categories depending on a riders’ fitness and ability levels, whereas there are 4 categories for Road cyclists, catering also for riders’ fitness and ability levels. These categories range from elite cyclists (A Group) to fun riders (F or D Groups). Club rides are hosted during the week (early mornings and afternoons) with longer weekend rides held on Saturdays.
