The Sax Young Cycling Track in Alexandra Park, Pietermaritzburg, was constructed in 1937 with an asphalt surface and measured 460m. It was later rebuilt in 1949 with the width increased and banking gradient raised to 18°. Early in the 1980’s the asphalt cycling track was replaced with a concrete surface with a steeper gradient, only to be damaged in the floods of 1987. After a year, the current track was finally repaired and has since hosted many Inter-Provincial Track Championships, some of the top Grand Prix Track Sprint Events, as well as South African Track Championships.
Today, the Sax Young Cycling Track provides a safe training environment for all cyclists, and was the venue for Burg Wheelers Cycling Club’s inaugural 24-hour team track cycling challenge in 2022. The cycling club regularly provides financial support and other resources towards maintaining the cycling track and its surrounds, including the lights, and our aim is to preserve this unique facility for generations of cyclists to come.
Burg Wheelers Cycling Club aims to meet to changing needs of our members, creating a fun social environment, enabling our members to embrace a healthy lifestyle that cycling offers.
